Larry Wallach and I decided last summer to prepare a performance of Schubert’s first great cycle, “Die Schöne Müllerin,” that would depart from the tradition of having male voices.  We have studied and rehearsed over the intervening months and are convinced that this is a great way to present these fabulous songs and this touching and psychologically complex story:  through the voice of a narrator who embodies all the characters—not only the young miller, but the brook, the old miller, his daughter, and the hunter.  This is a story of idealism, deception (of self and of the other), the benevolence and hostility of nature, of psychopathology, despair and of transcendence.  It can be heard as an opera of the mind or as a collection of some of the greatest songs ever written.

We are excited to share this interpretation with you on Sunday May 26 in the intimate surroundings of the parlor at the Village Inn in South Egremont, and honored that Sara Keene will be reading the prologue.  Seating there is limited, so if you plan to come, give them a call.  There will be refreshments and an opportunity to chat with us afterwards and share your responses.  Donations gratefully accepted.
