MORLEY AND MORE: AN EVENING OF MADRIGALS AND MERRIMENT!

  • St John's in the Village 211 Waverly Place New York, NY, 10014 United States (map)

This program explores the music of Thomas Morley, one of the greatest composers of the Elizabethan period in England. Building on the work of his mentor, William Byrd, Morley combined masterful technique and an intimate knowledge of the Italian madrigal style to develop the quintessentially English style on display in such beloved works as “Sing we and chant it”, “My bonny lass she smileth”, and “Fyer, fyer”. But there was more to Morley than this: he also composed sacred works and lute songs, and published important collections of works by his English and Italian contemporaries. Our program samples all of this music. Featured will be canzonets, madrigals, balletts, lute songs, and sacred works by Morley himself, along with music of other composers that were published by Morley, and Italian works that had a particular influence on him. Come join us for an evening of madrigals, merriment, and more!
